You Can’t Always Blame Your Genetics

How often have you heard a friend or co-worker complain about the size of their backside only to turn around and blame their family genetics for those extra pounds? It seems almost every one these days has inherited the “fat gene”. Although the obesity related FTO gene is a real gene which you may inherit from your parents, the size of your waist ultimately lies in your own hands. The University of Maryland School of Medicine has concluded a study which proves just how powerful physical activity can be in counteracting weight gain. Doctor Evadine Rampersaud of the University of Miami Institute for Human Genetics states that, “Our results strongly suggest that the increased risk of obesity due to genetic susceptibility can be blunted through physical activity.” While placing the blame on others used to work in the past, those excuses just won’t cut it anymore. Cardiovascular exercise and weight training continue to play a vital role in getting and maintaining a healthy body.
